Box Score DOVER, Del. – The Christopher Newport University field hockey team picked up their ninth win of the season in an exciting game against Wesley College. The Captains scored with just five minutes remaining to win the game 2-1.
The ball went back and forth in the first half without either team scoring a goal. The Captains took four shots while the Wolverines had a total of eight. Wesley had five corners in the first half to CNU's one.
The Captains jumped out after halftime to score a goal just three minutes in off a penalty corner. The ball was hit out by
Stephanie Bair (Virginia Beach, Va.) to
Kylie Cale (Chester, Va.) who took a shot from outside of the circle.
Katelyn Yandle gathered the ball, turned, and shot, putting the ball into the back of the cage. Yandle is leading the Captains in goals with eight.
Wesley tied it up with nine minutes left in the game off an unassisted goal from
Sheree Pleasanton.
CNU answered just three and a half minutes later as
Chrissy Kurecki (Richmond, Va.) gathered the ball and dribbled past a defender into the circle. The goalkeeper came out and dove on her side as Kurecki pulled the ball to the right, dribbled around the keeper and sent the ball into the back of the goal to give the Captains a 2-1 lead.
Brittany Bradsher (Hampton, Va.) had a great performance in the goal for the Captains totaling eight saves.
The Captains are now 9-1 while the Wolverines dropped to 6-5.
CNU continues its weekend on the road as they travel to Washington College tomorrow for a 2:00pm game.
