NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The CNU men held off a late charge by Greensboro and scored a 76-67 victory Sunday at the Freeman Center.
Led by
Mark Blasingame who had 18 points and 14 rebounds, the Captains grabbed a 28-21 halftime lead and increased that margin to 63-49 with 5:19 left on a
Mike Green jumper. That capped a 13-2 run by CNU.
But Greensboro fought back, closing to with two, 67-65, with 1:14 to go on a basket by Lewis Owenby.
Green scored again at the 56 second mark, and then added another basket 25 seconds later to put CNU in control.
Blasingame finished with 18 points and 15 rebounds and came within two points of becoming the 25th player in CNU history to score 1,000 points. He is also just 46 rebounds from 1,000. He would become the third player, with James Boykins and Antoine Sinclair, to accomplish that double-double, and is already the career leader in blocked shots.
Green also scored 18 by going 8-11 from the floor and
Conley Taylor had 11.
The Captains are now 9-8 on the year and 4-2 in the USA South. The loss dropped Greensboro to 9-9 and 2-3.
CNU hosts Shenandoah Wednesday at 7:30.
