Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport, ranked #19 in the nation in field hockey, defeated Mary Washington Wednesday in overtime, 4-3. The Captains led the Eagles 3-1 at halftime and maintained that lead until Mary Washington scored two goals in a 90-second span in the second half to tie the game and send it to overtime.
Senior Anne Gehring scored the game-winner with 4:18 remaining in overtime.
Junior Taylor Harrell scored CNU's first two goals in the first half, and now leads the squad with seven for the season. Freshman Caitlin Cahill scored the other Captains goal.
Mary Washington got a first half goal from Kaitlyn Ripley. Erin Duffy and Florence George scored 90 seconds apart in the second half to tie the game.
CNU beat Mary Washington in double overtime in Fredericksburg last season, 2-1.
Mary Washington falls to 6-5 on the season while CNU is now 6-2.
The Captains host Eastern Mennonite Sunday at 2 pm.
