NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The Christopher Newport men's soccer team picked up a very important regional victory over the Roanoke Maroons on Tuesday night by a score of 2-1.
Andrew Bonorden got the Captains on the board in the first half as he scored off a Clif Kipper pass in the 32nd minute. Roanoke tried to answer and had many opportunities in the first half but they were unable to even the score.
In the second half the Captains' Nao Masuda scored off a pass from Brian Lybert in the 51st minute to put the Captains up 2-0.
Roanoke would not go away quietly as Jon Marc Winchester scored in the 81st minute to cut the deficit in half. The next several minutes saw the Maroons put pressure on Captains' goalie Justin Wolfe but again they could not find the back of the net.
With the win the Captains improve to 6-1 overall. The loss drops Roanoke to 5-3-2.
Up next for CNU is a trip to Georgia where they will play Emory on Saturday at 6pm and Piedmont on Sunday at 2pm. The Saturday game will be a rematch of last season's Sweet 16 matchup that saw the Captains prevail by a 2-0 score.
