LEXINGTON, Va. – The Christopher Newport volleyball team split its first two matches at the Washington & Lee Invitational Friday, falling to No. 1 ranked Emory, 3-1, and then defeating host Washington & Lee, 3-0.
In the opener CNU fell in the first set, 25-22, but then bounced back for a 29-27 win in set two. The veteran Eagles then outlasted the young Captains, 25-13 and 25-16 in the final two sets.
Three players had ten kills each for CNU, Bailey Jensen, Caitlyn Jansen and Cory Harris. Ryan Lowery had 19 assists and Jessie Heavenrich added 17.
CNU then topped W&L, 32-30, 25-18, 25-21, in the day's second match as Jansen led with 13 kills and Kara Elder added 10. Abby Hogge contributed 13 digs and Lowery had 20 assists and Heavenrich 16.
CNU, now 5-2, faced No. 2 ranked Juniata at 10:30 Saturday and Southern Virginia at 1 p.m.
