NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport opened the 2009 field hockey season Tuesday with a 9-0 win at Captains Field over Sweet Briar College. CNU, ranked #14 in the nation in Division III, jumped to an early lead and held a 4-0 advantage at the half. The Captains then scored five more times in the second half for the 9-0 victory.

   Sophomore Kelsey Rigby (Falmouth, MA) scored three times to lead the way for Christopher Newport. Freshman Lindsay Hendricks (Chesapeake, VA) scored two times. The Captains out-shot Sweet Briar, 35-3.

   CNU now leads the all-time series with the Vixens, 6-1. Sweet Briar was also playing for the first time this season.

   The Captains return to action on Sunday with a home game vs. Washington College at 3 pm at Captains Field.
