NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Trailing early in the second half by nine points, the CNU men rallied for a 71-65 win over Salisbury on the first day of the CNU Classic Saturday night at the Freeman Center.
After CNU took a 33-32 halftime lead, the Seagulls scored the first ten points of the second half to take a 42-33 lead with 15:42 to play.
But the Captains owned the next five minutes, outscoring Salisbury, 10-0, to push back on top, 43-42 at the 11:00 mark.
The lead then changed hands four times before a three-pointer by Jake Capin gave CNU the lead for good, 52-51, with 7:24 remaining. The Captains never led by more than six the rest of the way, but held off Salisbury for their fourth straight win.
Capin, a transfer from Campbell, scored a career-high 17 points coming off the bench, hitting five of seven threes.
Josh Russell also scored 17 points, including 4-7 three-point shooting, as the Captains hit 13 of 30 three-point attempts.
