Football Falls to Maryville, 21-14

NEWPORT NEWS, VA- Maryville College scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to beat Christopher Newport Saturday at POMOCO Stadium, 21-14.

It was the first win ever for the Scots over the Captains in five tries. CNU scored two touchdowns in the second quarter to build a 14-7 halftime lead. The Scots rallied behind junior quarterback Tim Conner, who threw two touchdown passes and also ran for the game-tying score early in the fourth quarter. Conner's one-yard plunge evened the game at 14 with 11:50 to go.

The Scots, who are now 4-5 on the season and 2-4 in USA South Athletic Conference play, scored the game-winning touchdown with 8:29 to play on a 39-yard scoring pass from Conner to Sam McCord. Conner finished the game 11 of 17 for 165 yards and two scoring throws.  He opened the scoring with a three-yard TD pass to tight end Jonathan Coughron late in the first quarter.

The Captains were hampered by second-half turnovers and penalties, and saw their record fall to 5-4 overall and 4-2 in the USA South Athletic Conference. The loss ended CNU's hopes of post-season play in 2009.

"We just didn't have enough," CNU head coach Matt Kelchner said after the defeat. "We turned the ball over three times, we racked up 10 penalties for 90 yards, and our top two quarterbacks were injured. It was too much to overcome."

CNU started sophomore Antonio Epps, who suffered a hip pointer last week at Ferrum, at quarterback. After his injury was aggravated, he was relieved by freshman Christian Woelfel-Monsivais, who sparked the offense with a 63-yard scoring pass to sophomore Maurice Gaines early in the second quarter. Woelfel-Monsivais also led the Captains to another score in the second quarter with a 58-yard completion to junior T.J. Foster that took the ball to the Maryville six yard line.

Senior Tunde Ogun, who was held to just 55 yards on 26 carries for the day, scored on a six yard run with 5:38 to play in the first half to give the Captains a 14-7 lead at the break. The score for Ogun was his 38th career touchdown in 27 games as a Captain.

Woelfel-Monsivais was knocked out of the game following a sack in the second half, and Epps returned to the game. The CNU offense was only able to generate 80 yards in the entire second half.

Senior linebacker Kyle Chewning, who leads the conference in tackles, made 10 stops for Maryville and also recovered a fumble.

Junior Adrin Diggs, CNU's top tackler this season, made a game-high 16 stops.

Christopher Newport concludes the season next Saturday at Methodist at 1 pm.
