Men's Soccer Downs N.C. Wesleyan 2-1

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - The #2 CNU Men's Soccer team began their USA SOUTH play with a 2-1 win over rival North Carolina Wesleyan.

The Captains wasted no time in getting on the board Winston Mattheisen headed  in a Brian Lybert corner kick less than 90 seconds into the match. The goal was Mattheisen's seventh of the year.

CNU would hold the lead until ten seconds remained in the first half. The Bishops' Staffan Alm was able to manuever past the Captain's defense and his shot came up short of the goal but CNU goalkeeper Justin Wolfe came out to make a play on the ball and missed. The result was a streaking Javier Castrillo kicking in the short shot to knot the game at one goal each.

The second half play was dominated by the Captains as the Bishops were only able to get off two shots on goal, however, the CNU was unable to score until the 82nd minute when Brian Lybert knocked in his third goal of the year off a deflection. This was also his second game winner of the season.

With the win the Captains improved to 10-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference. North Carolina Wesleyan falls to 4-6 and 0-1 in the conference.

CNU will return to action this Saturday when they host Methodist at 7pm on Captains Field.
