GREENSBORO, NC - The Captains of Christopher Newport edged Greensboro College Saturday night, 14-7, at Jamieson Stadium in Greensboro, North Carolina. CNU trailed at halftime, 7-0, but scored two second-half touchdowns to hold off the Pride. Both scores capped long drives as the Captains dominated the second half.
Senior tailback Tunde Ogun rushed for 124 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, to become Christopher Newport's all-time leading rusher. He now has rushed for 3,152 career yards, surpassing Roland Hilliard's career total of 3,149.
Sophomore quarterback Antonio Epps, who completed nine of 12 passes, scampered for a four-yard score with 8:07 remaining in the fourth quarter to break a 7-7 tie. CNU's defense then held the Pride on a game-ending drive to preserve the win.
"I really want to credit our defense," Head Coach
Matt Kelchner said after the USA South win. "We stepped it up in the second half and held them three times in our red zone. It really was the difference in the game."
Ogun's score came with 11:24 to play in the third quarter, and capped a seven play, 68-yard drive to start the second half. It was the 35th in his CNU career and Ogun also holds the school mark for career scores.
"We were worried about Tunde," Kelchner said. "He had some fluid drained off his knee this week and we weren't even sure he was going to be able to go. He came on strong in the second half, as our whole team did."
Epps' score capped a 16-play, 80-yard drive that took 8:23 off the clock in the late third quarter and early fourth quarter.
Christopher Newport has never lost to Greensboro, and now leads the all-time series, 9-0.
The win gives the Captains a 4-3 overall record and a 3-1 mark in the USA South. Greensboro falls to 3-4 and 1-3.
The Captains travel to Ferrum next Saturday for a Halloween matchup with the Panthers of Ferrum College.
