During her eight seasons as the head coach of the Christopher Newport women’s lacrosse team, Carolyn Query has redefined success and elevated the program to one of the finest in the Region. In an unprecedented run, she has guided the Captains to six NCAA Tournament appearances during her eight-year tenure.
A five-time USA South Coach of the Year, Query has compiled an incredible 104-49 overall record. In conference action, her teams have been even more impressive, rolling off a 45-7 mark while capturing six league titles.
Following a spectacular run in the USA South, Query and the Captains transitioned to the Capital Athletic Conference in 2014. Facing one of the deepest leagues in the nation, CNU qualified for the conference tournament in 2014 and 2015. Query also made history during the latter season as she picked up her 100th career victory against Frostburg State on March 28, which gave her twice as many wins as any other coach in program history.
Before joining the CAC, Christopher Newport capped off its time in the USA South with the most historic campaign in program history. During the 2013 season, Query and the Captains made a national statement, earning the program’s first-ever top-20 ranking while advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Eventually climbing as high as No. 13 in the IWLCA poll, CNU went on to set a new program-record for victories after notching an 18-3 mark, including a win against No. 15 Washington & Lee.
Setting nearly every conceivable single-season record during the year, the 2013 Captains eventually picked up their first-ever NCAA Tournament victory after toppling Sewanee in the first round, 23-6, in Newport News.
Although the 2013 campaign set a new benchmark for the program, Query's teams have been consistently strong since she took over in 2008. Since taking the reins, she has never won fewer than 13 games in a season. Along the way, the Captains also ripped off 37 consecutive league victories, marking the second-longest in-conference winning streak in the nation.
A 2007 graduate of Monmouth University, Query received a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication and graduated magna cum laude. A perennial member of the dean’s list, she was also named to the Northeast Conference Academic Honor Roll and was selected to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District team as a senior.
On the field, she helped lead the Hawks to a pair of NEC championships and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. One of the finest players in program history, she finished her career ranked third on the school’s all-time scoring list with 174 goals. A team captain, she was a two-time All-Northeast Conference selection as well.
Honored as the NJAIAW Woman of the Year, Query also received the prestigious Bill Boylan Award, which is bestowed upon a Monmouth senior that best exemplifies leadership, sportsmanship, scholarship, and athletic ability. In addition to those honors, she was named the NEC Spring Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was a member of the Lambda Sigma Tau Honor Society.
Carolyn is married to Mike Query, the strength & conditioning coordinator at Stevenson University.
