Briana Sutton joined the coaching staff for the Christopher Newport track & field program in 2017 following a decorated career as a multi-sport standout with the Captains.

Prior to joining the coaching staff, Sutton was a four-time national qualifier in the combined events during her time with the CNU track & field program. She advanced to the indoor national meet three times in the pentathlon before earning a bid to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the heptathlon as a senior. A perennial All-Conference and All-Region selection, she finished ninth nationally in the pentathlon and 10th in the heptathlon during the 2016-17 campaign.

In addition to her work with the track & field program, Sutton was a two-time All-American in volleyball. During her four seasons with the Captains, she was named the CAC Player of the Year twice. She eventually wrapped up her tenure ranked 10th in program history with 1,166 career kills.

For her work in both sports, Sutton was named the CAC Female Athlete of the Year as a junior in 2015-16.
