Meredith Powell has served as an assistant coach with the Christopher Newport softball team since 2016.

Since joining the Captains, Powell has helped the team record a 69-19 record while advancing to the NCAA Tournament each year. In 2017, CNU also won the Capital Athletic Conference Championship.

Powell joined the Captains following a successful five-year run as a head coach at Warhill High School. During her time with the Lions, she guided the team to an appearance in the state semifinals in 2015 and was honored as the Conference 25 Coach of the Year. In addition to her efforts at Warhill, she served as an assistant coach with the Peninsula Starz Fastpitch Organization for two years and pitched competitively for more than a decade.

A graduate of Christopher Newport, Powell earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications in 2006 before receiving a Master's in Special Education from Cambridge College in 2009. She has served as a special education teacher for 10 years and is currently employed at Grafton Middle School in York County.

A native of Newport News, Meredith is married to Robert Powell and has two stepchildren, Jordan and Shelby. In addition to her work with the CNU softball team, her father, Bob Schmidt, was an assistant football coach with the Captains, and her cousin, John Harvell, is currently the head baseball coach.
