Josh Freeman

Josh Freeman begins his third season as an assistant coach with the Christopher Newport softball team in 2020.

In his first three seasons in Newport News, Freeman has helped lead the Captains to two straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the Super Regionals in 2019. Overall, Christopher Newport has posted a 74-19 record since 2018 and reached the top spot in the NFCA National Coaches Poll for the first time in program history last year.

Before arriving at CNU, Freeman served as an assistant coach at Virginia Wesleyan University in 2017. During his time with the Marlins, he helped the squad capture the program’s first NCAA Championship. Along the way, VWU registered a 54-3 record while leading the nation in winning percentage (.947), shutouts (31), and ERA (0.80).

Prior to joining the collegiate ranks, Freeman made a name for himself on the high school and travel ball circuits. He served as the head coach of the Green Run varsity team in 2015 and 2016 after spending time as the JV coach for two seasons.

Along with his efforts at Green Run, Freeman also worked as the manager of the Hampton Road Vipers fastpitch softball club from 2009-16. He helped lead the squad to the ASA Eastern Nationals Championship while qualifying for multiple nationally-recognized tournaments.

A native of Charlotte, N.C., Freeman graduated from East Carolina in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science in Communications. He and his wife, Melissa, have one child, Lauren.
