Maurice Sumter

Maurice Sumter has been a key member of John Krikorian's staff for the past two seasons. He joined the Captains staff prior to the 2019-2020 season after spending three seasons assisting at Virginia State University, where he was involved with player development as a front court position coach. His squad produced All-Americans in back to back seasons, and both went on to play professionally in Europe. He also was heavily involved in recruiting, day to day and travel operations, and administrative duties.
 
A Norfolk, Virginia, native by way of Alexandria, Virginia, Sumter was part of the very successful T.C. Williams High School program. In his time at T.C. Williams, he received numerous honors… including All-District Player of the Year, 1st team All-Region, and All- Metropolitan team in the D.C. area. He also led his team to a 25-4 Record and a Regional Semi-final appearance.
 
Sumter continued his playing career at Longwood University and was the first ever Division I men's basketball recruit in school history.  Sumter went head to head with more than 15 eventual NBA players. In his junior and senior seasons, he led the team in scoring, steals, and was second in rebounding and blocks. In both seasons he was named first team All-Independent and third team All-State. He was also named Male Athlete of the Year at Longwood University, and was selected one of the top five players of all time in Longwood's history by ESPN. Sumter finished his impressive career in the top five all time in scoring, rebounding, assists, steals, and blocks. After completing his career at Longwood, Sumter played three years professionally…making stops in Holland, Portugal, and Macedonia.
 
Sumter spent one season, 2016-17, as an assistant coach at Harcum Junior College, where his squad recorded a 22-9 record and a regular season conference championship. Sumter was also a volunteer assistant at Old Dominion University in 2015 and Shaw University in North Carolina in 2014.  He began his coaching career and spent four seasons as assistant coach at Indian River High School in Chesapeake, Virginia. He also spent two summers with the Adidas Gauntlet Powerhouse Team Loaded (NC), where he assisted in coaching and recruited some of the top ranked high school players in the country.
