Jon Waters' impact on Christopher Newport University athletics can be seen and felt in virtually every program. Waters, as the Senior Associate Director of Athletics, has overseen and directed countless improvement and construction projects involving CNU's amazingly successful athletic program.
Waters, a Newport News native, has been responsible for the management of all of CNU's outstanding athletic facilities. He has also been instrumental in gameday operations for all of CNU's programs.
A graduate of Denbigh High School, Waters earned a bachelor's degree in Leisure Studies and Physical Education from Christopher Newport University in 1991. He later received his master's in Educational Administration from George Washington University in 1998.
His first taste of success at CNU came as a student-athlete on the men's basketball squad playing for C.J. Woollum. Waters was a part of what, at the time, was considered the school's best team ever. The 1990-91 squad posted a 24-5 record and reached the NCAA "Sweet 16" for the first time in school history.
After his playing days, Waters joined Woollum's staff as an assistant coach and spent 19 seasons on the bench. The Captains posted an overall record of 379-145 during that time, a remarkable .723 winning percentage. Along the way, CNU played in 13 NCAA tournaments, reaching the Sweet 16 five times and the Elite 8 in 2000-01. In conference play, the Captains posted a record of 173-57, a startling .752 winning percentage with nine conference championships.
During his tenure on the CNU sideline, Waters assisted in the development of seven All-Americans as well as some of the top shot blockers in Division III history.
As the years passed, Waters' involvement in the overall athletic program became larger and larger. He was promoted to the position of Senior Associate Director of Athletics in the summer of 2010.
Waters stepped back into the coaching ranks when he took over the women's basketball program on an interim basis for the 2011-2012 season. He led the Captains to a 22-6 record and a 15-3 mark in the USA South.
When Woollum transitioned to the position of Director of Athletics Emeritus in 2012, Waters led the department as Interim Athletic Director for just over a year until June of 2013.
Waters and his wife Susan have two children, Caroline Grace and Jack, and reside in Yorktown.
