After spending over 20 years on the sidelines at the high school and collegiate level, Snead joins the Christopher Newport staff for the first time in 2018. His focus with the Captains will be with the outside linebackers.Â
Since 2012, Snead served as football head coach and Athletics Director at Palm Beach Lake Community HS in West Palm Beach, Florida. He previously worked as the offensive coordinator for the Division I Hampton University Pirates in 2009-10. Prior to his tenure at Hampton, Snead was a state championship caliber head coach around the nation, working as a head coach in four different states. He won his first state championship as a head coach in 2006 at Glades Central Community HS in Florida, and went on to also capture the 2008 Michigan state championship at Holland Christian HS in 2008. In a two-year stint at Muskegon Heights HS in Michigan, Snead guided the team to back-to-back district finals and reached the state semifinals in 2009. Previous stops also included head coaching gigs in Illinois and California.
Throughout his illustrious career, Snead has garnered a bevy of individual honors including state coach of the year honors in both Florida and Michigan. He was a finalist for the Lou Groza High School Coach of the Year in 2005 after finishing the season ranked #1 in class 3A and #5 overall with Glades Central. An astute camp coach as well, Snead has coached wide receivers and quarterbacks at camps across the nation including at the University of Florida, Duke University, NC State University, and Wake Forest University.Â
Following a four-year career as a wide receiver at the University of Florida, Snead was drafted in the 12th round by the New York Jets in 1989. He played in the Canadian Football League for the Toronto Argonauts and the Saskatchewan Roughriders.Â
Snead and his wife Sofia have been married 28 years and have three sons. His eldest, Willie L. Snead IV, is currently playing in the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens, while his sons Taylor and Isaiah are students at Lynn University and Catholic University, respectively.Â
