MATT McLEOD is in his second season with the Christopher Newport football program. McLeod came to CNU after spending 13 years coaching high school football. His extensive experience at the high school level includes three seasons as the head football coach at Deep Run High school in Richmond. He was also the head football coach at Grafton High School for four seasons, and most recently served as an assistant coach at Lafayette High School in Williamsburg, where he was a part of the 2020 3A State Championship squad.
McLeod mentored countless high school players who have gone on to be successful college football players, military commanders, coaches, businessmen and overall productive members of society. Prior to coaching high school football, McLeod spent 14 seasons coaching in the college football ranks. He began as an assistant coach at Clemson University, coaching linebackers and assisting with player development. While at Clemson, McLeod worked with the Tigers’ defensive staff and was responsible for the linebacking corps. Among the players he tutored was consensus All-American linebacker and 1999 Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year Keith Adams, who went on to become a Butkus Award finalist and 2001 draft pick of the Tennessee Titans.
Following his tenure at Clemson, Matt then went to work at The College of William and Mary, where he served in several capacities including Defensive Coordinator, Defensive Line, Inside Linebackers, and Special Teams coach. A fiery leader, McLeod motivated and mentored a wealth of all-Conference and all-American talent over his eight seasons at William and Mary
McLeod enjoys spending time with his family, including his wife, Kirsten, and his two sons, Nate and Ben. In his spare time he enjoys fishing.
