Christopher Newport University

Captains fans are familiar with the name Mario Byrd from his playing days with Christopher Newport. The CNU graduate joins the staff of Art Link for the 2021 season, coaching the outside linebacking corps.
 
Byrd was a standout defensive lineman for the Captains from 2016 to 2019, playing for both Matt Kelchner and Art Link. A native of Newport News, Byrd graduated from Warwick High School before coming to Christopher Newport
 
In addition to coaching the Captains, Byrd also is a Social Studies teacher in the Newport News school system.
