Landon Mariani is in his fifth season as the Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach of the Captains. Before coming to Christopher Newport, Mariani spent ten seasons on the staff at Campbell University, where he also served as Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks coach.
Mariani’s impact on the Captains offense was obvious from the start, producing a prolific passing attack. In his first season in 2017, the Captains led the NJAC in passing as Christopher Newport finished fourth in total offense. Quarterback KJ Kearney finished the season ranked third nationally in completion percentage at 69.2%. Last season, Christopher Newport‘s attack averaged 26.4 points per game, fourth in the NJAC, 259.6 yards passing per game (second-best in the conference), and the Captains were third in the league in completion percentage. In total offense, Christopher Newport averaged 355.6 yards per contest, ranking them fourth in the NJAC.
While holding many titles during his Campbell career, Mariani was handed the reigns as the play-caller in 2013. During the 2013 season the offense increased its scoring from 14 points per game the previous year to 29 points per game, while also breaking 29 individual and team records. In 2013, he helped produce the Camels’ first All-American in Running Back Kurt Odom, along with the their first 1,000 yard running back (DeShawn Jones) in 2015 and first 1,000 yard wide receiver (Aaron Blockmon) in 2016.
Mariani’s resume also includes time as an assistant at Coastal Carolina (2005-2007) and his alma mater, North Carolina (2004-2005). At Coastal Carolina, the program posted back to back conference championships and advanced to the 2006 FCS playoffs. As a student-athlete at UNC, Mariani played four seasons as a quarterback and signal caller. He was a member of the Peach Bowl Championship squad in 2001 with the Tar Heels.
Mariani earned his bachelor’s degree in Exercise & Sports Science from North Carolina in 2004 and then earned his master's degree in Instructional Technology from Coastal Carolina in 2007.
