Christopher Newport University

Yaphet Melendez joined Christopher Newport as an assistant field hockey coach in 2020, bringing along international playing experience and an extensive résumé to his new position on the sidelines with the Captains.

Prior to arriving in Newport News, Melendez was a member of the Puerto Rican National Field Hockey Team. During his time with the squad, he competed on the international circuit while appearing in several high profile competitions, including the U-21 Pan-American Games and an Olympic Qualifier in Jamaica.

In addition to his playing experience, Melendez has also served as a coach with the Carolina All-Stars and Stick Power Field Hockey Clubs as well as a variety of other organizations and camps.

A 2019 graduate of North Carolina Central with a degree in physical education and a minor in coaching, Melendez was also a five-year member of the UNC Field Hockey Club Team and helped lead the squad to three national championships.
