Pivot Physical Therapy
Christopher Newport University’s Sports Medicine department works in collaboration with physical therapists from Pivot Physical Therapy, Inc. to provide the highest quality patient-centered care. A physical therapist is available on campus once a week and can provide assistance to student-athletes with post-operative rehabilitation protocols. In addition to these services, they also provide dry-needling, gait analysis, orthotic fitting, and aquatic therapy among others.

Meet our team physical therapists:
Steve Howell, MEd, PT – Vice President
Howell completed his undergraduate work at Washington State University in 1982, where majored in education, and honed his growing affinities by minoring in health, coaching and athletic training. While completing post-graduate work at UVA he became a certified athletic trainer (ATC) and began working at Virginia Military Institute in 1983. After completing PT school at the Medical College of Virginia in 1990, Howell joined his friends and future partners John Mitrovic and Wayne MacMasters to make Pivot Physical Therapy a reality. Today, Howell serves as Vice President of the organization and Regional Director for clinical operations and performance services associated to the Pivot Performance Center in Newport News. In addition to his duties at Pivol, Howell has been a football team physical therapist for Christopher Newport University since 2000, and performs PT work for the Coast Guard Blue Dolphins, South Eastern Virginia Aquatics, and Poquoson High School Athletics. Beyond his avid and ongoing support for local and collegiate athletes and mentoring PT and high school students, Howell has a special interest in shoulder, knee, foot and ankle rehabilitation and has been fabricating custom orthotics for more than two decades.
Howell devotes quality time to his wife Samantha and their five children. In his spare time he pursues hobbies including fishing, golf, walking, and working out with Pivot Performance trainers.
Steve holds
Direct Access Certification through the
Virginia Board of Physical Therapy, and is available to evaluate and treat patients without a prescription from a physician.
Michael Satterley PT, DPT, SCS, CIMT, CMTPT, CSCS – Program Director
Michael Satterley PT, DPT, SCS, CIMT, CMTPT, CSCS is the Clinical Director at
Pivot’s Oyster Point clinic, under the same roof as the Pivot Performance Center. He earned his Undergraduate degree and Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY. He utilizes his certification as a Sports Certified Specialist (SCS) and Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) in conjunction with Functional Movement Screens (FMS) and Dartfish video analysis to provide high-end functional return to sport training. He has been a Team Physical Therapist for Christopher Newport University since 2006.
His certifications in advanced Manual Therapy (CIMT) and Dry Needling (CMTPT), as well as proficiency in soft tissue tool work help runners and other athletes get back on the road and the field quicker and at a higher level. Michael has been practicing orthopaedic and sports physical therapy with Pivot Physical Therapy since 2006.
During his off time, Michael enjoys spending time with his wife and son, plays ice hockey and golf, works out at the gym, and has a newfound interest in road and mountain biking.
