The National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) believes,
“A commitment to academics and student-athlete success in the classroom is a vital part of the NCAA’s mission to integrate athletics into the fabric of higher education. The NCAA pledges to help student-athletes achieve their academic goals as well as their athletics goals.”
Christopher Newport University is dedicated to this overall mission and upholds the NCAA Division III
academic philosophy.
The main objective of the Faculty Team Representative program at Christopher Newport University is to enhance academic-athletic relations by providing opportunities for meaningful interactions among faculty, coaches and student-athletes.
A Faculty Team Representative (FTR) at Christopher Newport University is a faculty member who has an interest in athletics, supports and has an appreciation for the academic and athletic pursuits of our student-athletes, and would like to be a part of our Athletics Department and university mission for athletics integration.
- A Faculty Team Representative is willing to be paired with one of our 19 intercollegiate sports teams to cultivate a relationship with the coaches and student-athletes.
- A Faculty Team Representative is willing to promote and facilitate communication and understanding among faculty, coaches, and student-athletes.
- A Faculty Team Representative is able to, but not expected to
a. Attend practices and games (allowed to be on the sidelines or on bus trips)
b. Informally interact with student-athletes and coaches
c. Attend special team functions (cookouts, dinners, lunches, team building activities, workouts)
d. Receive team apparel
e. Be recognized for your service at athletic events
f. Be a SUPER FAN!
Each FTR will have his/her own style of interacting with the student-athletes and coaches. It is not necessary for the FTR to be an expert in the sport that he or she is paired with. This is meant to be an optional and fun experience and not an additional obligation placed on our faculty. The amount of time spent with a team will vary as a coach and FTR develop the relationship that suits their availability and interests.
