Assistance with minimizing and communicating conflicts for the student-athlete academic schedule
Competition Letter - A “competition letter” will be provided to all in-season student-athletes as a means of communicating competition and class conflicts directly from the student-athlete to the professor. Additionally, the Assistant Director of Student-Athlete Success Services (SASS) will gather departure times/out of class times for each semester and make this information available to professors. Only those student-athletes who are on the official travel roster may be excused from class due to a competition conflict.
Academic Advising
All CNU students will be assigned an Academic Advisor. The Advisor will help students in the selection of courses, long range academic planning, potential graduate study, as well as, career opportunities, summer institutes and study abroad possibilities. First year students will be given a Faculty Core Advisor (FCA) who will remain the student’s advisor for the first two years to support the student in their studies. The Faculty Academic Advisor and the student have co-ownership of the advising process and share the common goal of creating student success within the university environment. Academic Advising is not a responsibility of the Department of Athletics nor is a direct role of our Student-Athlete Success Services Program.
Academic Performance Tracking
Progress Reports – Progress Reports are requested 4 weeks into the semester regarding select student-athletes. This information is requested directly from professors who have Student-Athletes in their classes. The purpose of the progress report is to early identify student-athletes who are at risk of failing based on class attitude, assignment completion, attendance and assignments to date. The Assistant Director of Student-Athlete Success Services and Student-Athlete Success Coaches are responsible for reviewing the information and dispensing it appropriately to the coaching staff. Student-Athlete Success Coaches and team head coaches are responsible for communicating with a student-athlete about his/her performance.
Midterm Grade Reports – Midterm Grade Reports are reviewed 7-8 weeks into the semester. This information is provided by the Registrar’s office each semester. Professors are expected to submit midterm grades for all freshmen and upperclass students earning D’s or F’s. Midterm grades are available to the student-athlete by accessing CNU Connect during the month of October for the first semester and February for the second semester.
Academic Performance Updates – Updates can be requested by SASS of the professor to help to gauge student-athlete progress. A Student-Athlete Success Coach or coach can ask the Assistant Director of Student-Athlete Success Services to request the updates from professors for a particular student-athlete at any time during the semester.
Final Review of Semester Grades – Final grades are provided by the registrar and reviewed by the Assistant Director of Student-Athlete Success Services. This information is then dispensed and communicated appropriately to Student-Athlete Success Coaches and coaching staff. Information is used to help determine if the student-athlete is in future need of student-athlete success services.

Student-Athlete Success Coaches are each assigned a team(s). Student-Athlete Success Coaches work closely with athletics coaches of the assigned teams with an emphasis on providing support to first and second year student-athletes.
