BOSTON, Mass. - After lifting the Christopher Newport volleyball team to a 4-0 week away from home, a pair of Captains swept the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors on Monday afternoon. Senior
Maddie Hanes was named the C2C Defensive Player of the Week while rookie
Jasmine Williams hauled in C2C Offensive Player of the Week plaudits.
The duo joins
Simara Alexander as Captains who have collected Player of the Week honors this season. Hanes secures her fourth career Defensive Player of the Week certificate after being named the league's top defensive player three times last year.
Hanes registered double-digit digs in three of the four matches including a season-high 19 against Catholic in the final match of the weekend. She also had 14 digs against Stevenson and Notre Dame (Md.).
For the season, Hanes now has 147 digs and ranks in the top-ten in the C2C with 3.06 digs per set. She added two kills and 11 assists as Christopher Newport improved to 10-4 on the season.
On the offensive side, Williams piled up 32 kills in four matches this week while hitting at an impressive .393 clip with just five errors. She logged eight kills at Stevenson, seven vs. Notre Dame (Md.) and Lebanon Valley, and her fourth double-digit performance with 10 at Catholic.
She is currently hitting .321 for the season which is the second-highest hitting percentage by a freshman in program history, trailing only Hall of Famer Brittany Collins mark of .345 set in 2004. She added nine total blocks with four solo and five assisted rejections at the net.
The Captains will return to action on Tuesday evening when the team travels to Randolph-Macon College (6-6) for a 7:00 p.m. opening serve. CNU has eight of the last nine and looks to continue a five-match win streak heading into the road matchup with the Yellow Jackets. The Captains are 21-10 all-time against R-MC with three straight wins in the series.
Williams leads the squad with 2.47 kills per set while eclipsing 100 kills in her first 14 matches.
Alli Pratt has also reached the century mark in her senior season with 102 kills and a .301 attack percentage so far this season. Defensively, Hanes has carried the load with a team-high 147 digs but the team defense has been strong, averaging 13.79 digs per set including 98 digs from
Avery Hanly.
Randolph-Macon has dropped five of six and looks to right the ship against the Captains. Olivia Leonard leads the team with 1221 kills this season while Allison Lach has added 95. Caitlin Smith is the setter for the Yellow Jackets and has nearly 400 assists through the first 12 matches.
