SELINSGROVE, PA - Following a week off, the Christopher Newport University football squad returns to action on Saturday. The Captains, 2-0 to start the season, will take on the River Hawks of Susquehanna University in a 12:00 p.m. start at Amos Alonzo Stagg Field at Doug Arthur Stadium. The Hawks are 3-0 entering Saturday's matinee.

Paul Crowley's team last saw action on September 12th when the Captains defeated Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, CT, by a score of 37-7. CNU is currently ranked 17th in the country in the weekly poll from D3football.com, and the Captains are slotted 14th in the national poll from the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA).

"It's been a good break for us, having an early bye week allows you to continue to evaluate your team and put guys in a position to compete for spots," Crowley said on Thursday as his team prepared for the road trip. "Susquehanna is a great program, and has been for quite some time. They're an opponent we're very familiar with, and it certainly appears they are as strong as ever. We're really looking forward to the challenge." 

Saturday's Top 20 showdown will be the third all-time meeting of the programs. The Captains split two games with Susquehanna last season, winning at home during the regular season, 41-27, and then falling in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to the River Hawks, 42-28, also at TowneBank Stadium.

In the Captains win at WestConn two weeks ago, sophomore quarterback Brandon Pena threw for two scores, both to freshman receiver Braylon Addy, and senior running back Jordin Lennon rushed for two scores to spur the offense. Pena completed nine of 14 passes for 149 yards, and has now thrown five touchdown passes in CNU's first two victories. The Captains out-gained the Wolves in rushing yardage, 248-40, and in total yardage, 397-216. CNU's defense held WestConn to just 208 total yards, 168 passing and just 40 rushing. The Captains forced three Wolves fumbles, and also intercepted a pass. Senior running back Alex Jreige rushed for 98 yards on 15 carries, while Lennon posted 56 yards, also on 15 attempts. 

Susquehanna, meanwhile, is coming off a 49-23 victory at Johns Hopkins last Saturday in Baltimore, MD. The River Hawks are ranked 14th by D3football and 13th by the AFCA. The Hawks opened the season with an overtime victory at Union College, 23-17, and then won at Bridgewater College in Week 2, 41-14.

Following Saturday's game, the Captains return home to play the Pioneers of William Paterson University next Saturday, October 3rd, at TowneBank Stadium. The 1:00 p.m. game will be a part of Homecoming Weekend, and will also be the first of seven league contests in the New Jersey Athletic Conference for the Captains.
