Christopher Newport is playing at City Stadium for the first time since the first NCAA Tournament appearance in program history coming in 2001. That came in head coach
John Harvell's first season and saw CNU go 1-2 in the regional with the first NCAA Tournament victory in program history coming against Bridgewater College, 1-0. Twenty-five years later, the Captains will return to the field that opened postseason play for the program while making the 13th NCAA Tournament appearance.Â
CNU is 32-28 all-time in the NCAA Tournament (.533) ranking in the top-20 all-time among programs with at least 12 postseason appearances. Maryville has reached the postseason three times, with the first coming in 1977 before returning to regional play in 2025. The Captains have advanced to four of the last five NCAA postseason tournaments, reaching the NCAA regional title game in each of the previous three.Â
The Scots finished No. 29 in the NPI (NCAA Power Index) and will serve as the #2 seed and home team in the matchup against the #3 seeded Captains, who finished out the year No. 44 in the N
The Captains are led by junior first baseman
Aaron Maxie, hitting .414 with 38 RBI, 29 runs scored, and 16 extra-base hits. Maxie has also played standout defense at first base, setting the program record for the most chances in a single season without an error with 227. Hitting behind Maxie have been fellow juniors
Cameron Slough (.362) and
Gus Croll (.388), who have combined for 69 RBI and 56 runs scored. The middle of the CNU lineup has delivered in part because of an excellent tandem at the top in seniors
Jake Benedict (.348) and
Sam Benedict (.370). J. Benedict leads the team with 47 runs scored and has moved up to eighth all-time in career runs scored with 146; that mark is just four shy of joining the top five in program lore.Â
On the mound, graduate student
Jackson Baird earned first team All-Conference honors and continues to add to an historic career on the mound. Baird ranks sixth all-time in lowest opponent batting average (.229) and moved into the top ten in career strikeouts (191). Also leading the rotation are
Cooper Newell (5-0, 3.41 ERA) this season and
Ryan Morrison (3-3, 6.19 ERA) as the pair of seniors have helped lead the way in innings pitched.Â
Maryville is led by a potent lineup that features Det Dettwiller, hitting a team-leading .396, and Brayden Evans, hitting .371. The duo have combined for 73 RBI and 83 runs scored through the 44 games this season for the Scots. Titus Torbett has been the team's ace on the hill, posting a 5-3 record with a 2.70 ERA this season.Â
Following the action on Friday, the teams will return to City Field on Saturday to play out the regional bracket in Lynchburg. A full recap and box score will be available immediately following the action on CNUsports.com.Â
