Fourth-Quarter Rally Sets Up Overtime Heroics as No. 22 CNU Women's Lacrosse Outlasts No. 11 Washington and Lee, 8-7, in NCAA Tournament Thriller

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Orchestrating one of the greatest comebacks in program history, the 22nd-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team overcame a three-goal deficit in the fourth quarter before Brooklynn Peterson drained the overtime game-winner in the 63rd minute to cap off a thrilling 8-7 victory over No. 11 Washington and Lee during the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Alston Parker Watt Field.

Along with Peterson's heroics, Elena Sorkin added a pair of strikes, including the equalizer with four minutes left in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, on the defensive side, Hadley Chadwick matched her career-high with 12 saves, while Gabby Saia and Brookelyn Morrison disrupted a free-position attempt by the Generals in the extra session to set up the clinching blow on the other end of the field.

Stuffing the stat sheet with another well-rounded showcase, Morrison finished the day with four points, including assists on three of the game's final four tallies. She also hauled in six draw controls, forced a pair of turnovers, and grabbed two ground balls.

With that performance, Morrison wrapped up the weekend with 164 career ground balls, tying the all-time program record. Former legend Monica Evans also secured 164 rollers during her tenure from 2010-13.

In addition to Morrison's historic performance, Sorkin became the 23rd Captain to reach 100 career goals. Meanwhile, the senior star also sank her 70th strike of the season, becoming just the third player in program history to hit that benchmark. Previously, CNU Hall of Famers Kaitlin Quigley and Ashton Marshall had matching 76-goal campaigns in 2010 and 2013, respectively.

With the victory, Christopher Newport improved to 15-6 on the season and punched its ticket to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The Captains will resume the postseason on Saturday at 2 p.m. with a battle against No. 6 Denison at Salisbury's Sea Gull Stadium.

On the other side, Washington and Lee concluded the 2026 campaign with a 15-5 record.

Staring at a 7-4 deficit late in the third quarter, CNU began its comeback bid. Just before the horn sounded at the end of the stanza, Lexi Larson stayed with a cutter and prevented a pass from connecting on the interior before Laci Welch scooped up the roller, which flipped possession and gave the Captains the ball to start the fourth frame.

Taking advantage after a brief break, Morrison laced a sidearm seed to Sorkin, who sank a jump-shot on the inside that cut Washington and Lee's lead down to two in the 47th minute.

Although the Generals tried to respond, Chadwick built a wall between the pipes. The senior standout hauled in four saves, including a fantastic stop on a bounce shot. Following the final save, Saia secured the deflection and kicked off a successful clear, which handed the ball back to the attack.

On the ensuing possession, Sam Murphy cut through a crowd in the left wing, caught a teardrop from Morrison, and slammed a snipe over the keeper. Back within one, Christopher Newport stamped out W&L's response as Morrison helped deflect an eight-meter attempt before Chadwick swallowed a high heater.

Following the defensive stand, Sorkin went back to work. After taking control, she pushed towards the right alley before slamming on the brakes. Cutting back to her left, she spun around a defender, scooted inside, and skipped a screamer into the bottom left corner of the cage to knot the score at seven with four minutes left in regulation.

With time winding down, Washington and Lee mounted a pair of late rallies, but the visitors held tough. On the first push, Morrison jumped a passing lane and intercepted a feed on the interior. Then, after the Generals regained possession with less than 30 seconds remaining on the clock, CNU orchestrated one final defensive stand.

Although the hosts worked quickly in transition, Kate Lamendola met a streaker at the top of the 12-meter fan and redirected her into the right alley. Eventually, the attacker launched a shot at the cage, but Chadwick dropped low and blocked the bullet in the crease. Following the save, the ball bounced into the left wing, but Saia fought hard to keep the roller on the turf before Jess Hulse chased a General out of the zone to impede a last-second shot.

In overtime, Washington and Lee returned to the offensive end, but Christopher Newport continued its defensive domination. On a free-position attempt, Saia and Morrison quickly pinched down on the shooter to prevent an on-target blast. Keeping her wits in the crease, Chadwick gobbled up the deflection and connected with Molly Campbell, who cleared the back end.

Settling in on the offensive side, the attack showed tremendous patience. Refusing to settle for a low-percentage, the Captains circulated the ball around the zone. Finally, with 20 seconds left on the shot clock, Morrison took control in the left corner.

Creating some space, Elle Roberts ran a well-designed clear-out on the interior, which drew the attention of three defenders. With a little room to work, Peterson found an opening and caught Morrison's ensuing feed. After grabbing the ball, the freshman rolled to her right and unleashed an absolute stinger inside the pipe to wrap up the incredible come-from-behind win.

During the contest, CNU held a 32-25 advantage in shots and a 21-16 lead in ground balls. The Captains also controlled nine of the 17 draws.

Long before the game came to a close, the two squads traded blows in the early going. After the hosts opened the scoring, Lamendola ducked between a pair of defenders before ripping a rocket over the shoulder of the keeper in the sixth minute. Later, the Generals came back with two straight tallies before the Captains answered.

Near the end of the first quarter, Kate Webb found Peterson, who kicked off her afternoon with a slick strike on the interior. Then, in the second stanza, Morrison skipped a seed through the keeper on an eight-meter attempt, which evened the score at three.

Meanwhile, on the defensive end, Christopher Newport pushed back against W&L's advances. Welch shadowed a cutter on a roll down the center of the zone before Campbell plucked the ball in the left corner. Later, Faith O'Connor stayed in the face of a defender to help disrupt a clear attempt before Morrison stripped a General along the crease.

Although Washington and Lee eventually found some rhythm and scored three straight goals just before the end of the first half, CNU regrouped during the break. In the third period, O'Connor used a jump-cut to split two defenders before burying the squad's fourth strike. Trading blows, W&L fired back later in the period to regain a three-goal cushion.

However, that lead was not large enough. After Larson and Welch helped flip possession at the end of the stanza, Christopher Newport seized the momentum and started chipping away before Peterson added the final punctuation mark in overtime.

Saia and Murphy both finished with four ground balls for the victors, while Larson and Annabella Burke hauled in two apiece. Meanwhile, along with Morrison's six draw controls, Murphy secured a pair, while Megan Rotzler came down with a key snag in the fourth quarter.
