NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University won both ends of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at North Carolina Wesleyan University in Rocky Mount, N.C. The Captains took the opener by a 10-2 score in a game shortened to five innings, and then followed with a 6-3 victory in the nightcap at Edge Field.
Keith Parr's squad improved to 22-10 with the wins, while the Battling Bishops fell to 21-12.
The Captains opened the day by scoring five times in the first two innings and cruising to the 10-2 victory. CNU registered 12 hits in the game, and junior
Candace Slaw and sophomore
Cora Thomas each posted three. Slaw, who came into the twin bill leading the nation with 56 base hits, was three-for-four with a single, double, and triple...and scored three times and drove in three runs. Thomas, meanwhile, was three-for-three with two singles and a double, and scored twice and also knocked in a run.
Junior
Simone Thompson smacked her ninth home run of the season,a two-run shot in the first inning, to pull even with junior
Brooke Zuber for most home runs on the squad. Zuber opened the scoring for CNU with a sacrifice fly. Sophomore
Caroline Alger pitched all five innings of the opening game, yielding just two runs on five hits to the Bishops. She upped her record to 3-0 with the win.
In the second game, the Captains again jumped to a good start by plating four runs in the second and two more in the third and then held on for the 6-3 triumph. Thomas delivered the big blow with a three-run home run in the second frame, her second of the year, and junior
Katrina Swan posted a single and a double and drove home two runs to lead the CNU attack.
Alger again played a part in the pitching circle in the nightcap, entering the game in relief with one out and two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh inning. She struck out both batters she faced swinging to record her first save of the season. Senior
Mia Aiello threw three innings, allowing just one unearned run, to pick up the victory to improve to 2-1 on the year.
Christopher Newport returns home on Sunday, hosting Roanoke College at 12:30 p.m. Prior to the doubleheader at Captains Park, CNU will hold Senior Day ceremonies beginning at approximately 12:15 p.m.
