No. 13 CNU Baseball Hosts No. 25 Mary Washington and Regent This Weekend

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- A pair of home games against Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference opponents are on the schedule for 13th-ranked Christopher Newport baseball this weekend as the Captains (20-8) will host 25th-ranked Mary Washington (19-8) on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. before welcoming in Regent University (15-14) on Sunday afternoon at the same time. 

Live stats and a live video webcast will be available for both games at CNUsports.com. Admission to Captains Park is free of charge. 

The Captains have faced off against Mary Washington 50 times ahead of Saturday's showdown and own a decisive 37-13 advantage in the all-time series. Over the last 15 games in the series, the Captains are 12-3 versus the Eagles including a 6-1 mark at home. 

The matchup on Sunday against Regent University will be the first ever between the two programs as the Royals are competing in its inaugural season in 2026. Regent University joined the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference and are on pace to become a full NCAA Division III member for the 2028-29 academic year. 

The Captains enter the weekend with a 20-8 overall record including a 15-5 mark in home games. The offense is led by junior Aaron Maxie, hitting .388 and slugging .672 to lead the Captains in both categories. He returned to the lineup in Wednesday's matchup against No. 2 Lynchburg after over three weeks off due to an injury and promptly went 1-for-3 with a run scored. As a team, the Captains are hitting .316 with six regulars hitting .333 or better this season. Sam Benedict is hitting .385 while his brother, Jake Benedict, is leading the squad in total hits with 46 while hitting .368. Cameron Slough (.367), Gus Croll (.350), and Josh Reinhold (.333) round out the group of top hitters for CNU. 

On the mound, graduate student Jackson Baird is leading the rotation with a 4-2 overall record and a 2.44 ERA. He has 55 strikeouts in 44.1 innings pitched over eight starts. Cooper Newell is 4-0 with a 3.71 ERA and has 34 K's over 34.0 innings pitched. 

For Mary Washington, Oliver Martin leads the offense hitting .390 with a 1.010 OPS. Right behind Martin is Collin Clarkson with a .384 average while recording a team-high 38 base hits. Gavin Riley leads the pitching staff with a 5-0 record and a 3.60 ERA. 

Regent is led by Maddox German, hitting .354 with a team-high 31 RBI. Dylan Oblepias also has driven in 31 and has ten extra base hits with a team-high four home runs this season. On the hill, Will Maloney is 4-2 with a 2.05 ERA and three complete games. He leads the pitching staff with 46 strikeouts in 44.0 innings pitched. 

Following the weekend set against conference opponents, CNU will return to action with a pair of mid-week games this week. The Captains will travel to Roanoke COllege on Wednesday, April 15 at 3:00 p.m. before hosting Regent in another game on Thursday, April 16 at 3:00 p.m.
