ORLANDO, Fla. -- After a pair of wins during the Spring Break trip to Orlando, Florida, the 23rd-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis team suffered a 7-0 setback to No. 17 Carnegie Mellon in the trip's finale on Friday. The Captains fall to 7-2 after the loss while the Tartans are now 8-0 on the year.
The Captains dropped the doubles point with losses at No. 1 and No. 3 before the match at No. 2 was left unfinished. In singles action, rookie
Ivan Ceric forced a third-set at No. 6 but the rest of the matches went in straight sets for Carnegie Mellon.
Ceric took on Michael Larionov at No. 6 and dropped the first set, 6-3, but bounced back for a 6-2 win in the second. With the match yet clinched, the two players moved into a full third set where the Captains' newcomer dropped a 6-3 decision.
Fellow rookie
Nathan Russell won six games at No. 1 against Alex Feies before dropping a 6-4, 6-2 decision.
Nesh Kumaresan, playing at No. 2 against Diogo Tinoco, fell by a 6-1, 6-4 final.
Barrett Foster also won five games in a 6-1, 6-4 loss to Brendan Hendrata at No. 4.
In doubles,
Rainer Christiansen and
Alex Seretis dropped a close match at No. 3 to Feies and Takeshi Koey, 6-4.
The Captains will return to action in nine days when they host No. 38 Grinnell College at the Eyre Courts in Newport News.
