ORLANDO, Fla. -- Closing out their trip to the United States Tennis Association National Campus in Orlando, Florida, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team suffered a 7-0 setback to No. 17 Kenyon College. The Captains fall to 2-5 on the season while Kenyon improved to 5-2 overall.
CNU earned one doubles win in the match as
Kendal Chang and
Kylie Schaefer paired up for a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles. The Captains' tandem defeated Eleni Lazaridou and Hana Nouaime for the Owls, but it proved not enough as the Kenyon squad captured the other two doubles matches to secure the team point.
In singles play, Schaefer had the best showing for the Captains overall. Taking on nationally-ranked Kiara Komlodi at No. 2, Schaefer forced a first-set tiebreaker and then bounced back with a second-set win. The junior dropped the bout in a 7-6 (5), 4-6, 10-7 final that came down to the wire.
Also forcing a third-set tiebreaker was rookie
Emma Carver at No. 5 singles. Carver faced Elizabeth Ackermann and traded dominant sets before the breaker fell the Owls way. She finished out her match falling 6-1, 2-6, 10-4.
Lindsey Bergelin won six games in her match at No. 6 against Bridgette Kelly.
The Captains will return to action on Sunday, March 15 when they host Grinnell College at 1!:00 a.m.
