NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Becoming the third Christopher Newport player to earn Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week honors this season, senior
Ryan Morrison was selected on Monday following a historic pitching performance on Sunday afternoon. The left-handed starter pitched the second no-hitter in program history when he blanked St. Mary's (Md.) over seven innings in a 13-0 win.
Morrison joins
Cooper Newell (March 2) and
Jackson Baird (March 9) as Pitcher of the Week picks in 2026. Additionally,
Aaron Maxie (Feb 23) and
Lukas Miller (March 23) hauled in Player of the Week honors this season.
In a career-best performance, Morrison became just the second player to throw a no-hitter when he joined Eben Brower from May 2, 2004 against York (Pa.), nearly 22 years ago. He allowed just three base runners and none of them advanced beyond first base as he faced just three more than the minimum over 7.0 innings pitched.
Morrison struck out a career-high eight batters and induced 10 groundball outs in teh impressive overall performance as he improved to 2-0 on the season. During the no-hitter, he retired the side in order four times in seven innings pitched. Of the contact he allowed, the majority was weak contact up the middle as second baseman
Sam Benedict had five assists and a putout while rookie shortstop
Jake Mutter added three assists and one putout.
The nationally-ranked Captains will return to action on Wednesday, April 1 against North Carolina Wesleyan University. First pitch against the Battling Bishops is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
