FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Christopher Newport men's tennis team, ranked No. 23 in the nation, dropped a 5-2 decision on a neutral court against No. 13 Kenyon College (15-1) on Saturday afternoon. The Captains fell to 7-4 after the loss.
Kenyon swept all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead over the Captains heading into Singles.
Nesh Kumaresan and
Rainer Christiansen each won their matches in singles, but the top-15 program secured the win over CNU with four singles wins.
At No. 3 singles, Kumaresan took down Paulo Pocasangre Kreling in a close match. The CNU senior escaped the first set with a 7-6 (4) win and bounced back with a third set win that went the distance as well. Kumaresan finished off the win with a 7-6 (4), 3-6, 7-5.
In the matchup at No. 6 singles, Christiansen followed the same path as Kumaresan for his win with a first-set tiebreaker and a third set win. Facing Stylianos Papamichael, the CNU sophomore finished out his win 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-4.
Christopher Newport returns to action next weekend with a pair of matches on Saturday, March 28. The Captains will host Randolph College at 10:00 a.m. and North Carolina Wesleyan at 4:00 p.m.
