ORLANDO, Fla. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis team improved to 6-1 overall this season with a 6-1 win over Allegheny on Monday afternoon. The Captains swept doubles action and then picked up five wins in singles play to pull away from the Gators (5-4).
Traveling to Florida for three matches this week, the Captains first came at 11:00 a.m. on Monday morning against the Gators. CNU will also take on RPI this Thursday, March 5 at 11:00 a.m. before taking on Carnegie Mellon on Friday, March 6.
In doubles action,
Nesh Kumaresan and
Gabe Smith had the largest margin of victory with a 6-2 win at No. 2 against Benedek Kaibas and Adam Memije. CNU captured the doubles point with a 6-3 win at No. 1 where
Barrett Foster and
Vincent Truong took down Levente Mihaly and Olivier Erkens. The doubles sweep was finished out when
Rainer Christiansen and
Nathan Russell defeated David Rodriguez and Zidaan Hassan at No. 3, 7-5.
All five wins in singles gave Captains multi-win days as the Captains won matches on lines 2-6.
Truong captured his two-win day at No. 2 with a 6-1, 7-5 victory against Mihaly. At No. 3, Kumaresan outlasted Rodriguez for a 7-5, 7-6 (9-7) win and Christiansen had a similar battle at No. 5 against Hassan where he earned a 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 win. Foster, at No. 4, and Smith, at No. 6, added straight set wins for the Captains. Foster defeated Erkens (6-3, 6-1) and Smith took down Kaibas (6-3, 6-2).
The win for Truong was his 45th career victory and his third straight this Spring.
CNU will return to action on Thursday, March 6 against No. 20 RPI.
