OWINGS MILLS, Md. --
Facing a pair of top-five tests this week at the Callum Robinson Mustang Classic, the second-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will square off with No. 4 Lynchburg at 11 a.m. on Friday before battling No. 1 Tufts at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at Stevenson University's Mustang Stadium.

Entering the competition, CNU sits at 9-0 on the season, including 2-0 on the road. Meanwhile, Lynchburg is 4-0 overall, while Tufts is 3-0. Incidentally, in the latest USILA National Coaches Poll, all three programs received first-place votes. Tufts collected 25, while CNU and Lynchburg picked up one apiece.

The Captains, Jumbos, and Hornets were the only three teams in the country to receive a first-place vote in the poll.

For those fans unable to attend the games, live stats and a video stream of both contests will be available at GoMustangSports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

Single-day tickets for the Mustang Classic will be $15 for adults, $10 for seniors, and $5 for students. Children under 8 will be admitted free of charge. The tickets can be purchased at the entrance to Mustang Stadium on the day of the games.

Christopher Newport will be making the program's fifth straight appearance in the Mustang Classic, which is an annual gathering of some of the top teams in the nation at Stevenson's Mustang Stadium. During their previous four appearances, the Captains boast a 7-1 record, including two wins apiece against Dickinson, Gettysburg, and Lynchburg as well as a 15-11 triumph over No. 1 RIT during the 2023 competition.

CNU's lone setback during the Mustang Classic came in 2024 when the squad dropped a 13-12 overtime decision to No. 10 St. Lawrence.

Familiar with the facility, Christopher Newport has made Mustang Stadium a second home in recent years. Saturday's game against Tufts will be CNU's 16th all-time appearance at the stadium, which opened in 2011. That will match the most games played in any road facility in program history, equaling the team's 16 appearances at Salisbury's Sea Gull Stadium.

During the squad's first 14 games at Mustang Stadium, the Captains have accumulated an 11-3 record, including NCAA Tournament appearances in 2013 and 2021. Earlier this season, CNU also knocked off No. 9 Gettysburg, 16-9, at the facility on February 14.

Christopher Newport enters the Mustang Classic after wrapping up a six-game homestand with a 20-6 triumph over Ohio Northern on Sunday. During that stretch, Jamie Smith scored 29 goals, which marked the most by a Captain during a single homestand in program history. Fittingly, he capped off his historic surge with seven strikes on Sunday, which equaled the fifth-highest total in program history.

With his work on Sunday, Smith also extended his run to 27 consecutive games with at least one goal dating back to March 2, 2025. That matches the third-longest scoring streak in school history.

Along with Smith's work on the offensive end, Ryan Miller secured his second career hat-trick on Sunday against the Polar Bears, while Kevin Miller handed out four assists. Remarkably, the Miller brothers both rank among the national-leaders in assists this season. Kevin Miller is second on the national charts with 39 helpers, while his younger brother is sixth with 20.

On the defensive side, CNU is 11th nationally in takeaways-per-game with a 14.78 average. Continuing their thievery on Sunday, four players had multiple caused turnovers against Ohio Northern. Brett Kelley led the way with three strips, while Colin DeGrassi, AJ Rosacker, and Jackson Shaw chipped in with two apiece.

With his work over the weekend, Rosacker now has 89 career caused turnovers. That stands as the sixth-highest total in program history and the third-most by a long-stick midfielder. He is just three shy of matching former legend Teddy Pekalski for the second-highest total among LSMs in school lore.

Lynchburg and Tufts both enter the Mustang Classic with unblemished records and impressive early-season victories. Among the Hornets' four wins, they posted a 14-11 triumph at Salisbury, who entered the contest ranked second in the nation. Meanwhile, Tufts improved to 3-0 on Saturday after defeating No. 16 Amherst, 15-8, in a NESCAC showdown.

Entering Friday, Lynchburg currently boasts the nation's 10th-ranked scoring offense, which is averaging 16.75 goals per game. Will Rubley leads the team with 15 goals, including nine during a win over Pfeiffer on February 21. Meanwhile, Riley Hastings and Liam Holman have 16 points apiece, while Riley Frankel has won 60 percent of his 94 faceoff attempts. On the back end, Eric Allen boasts a .474 save percentage and 11.58 goals-against-average.

Led by Preseason National Player of the Year Jack Regnery, Tufts sits fourth in the country in scoring offense with an 18.00 goals-per-game average. Regnery, who ranks third among all active players in the NCAA with 191 career goals, currently has 16 points this season, including seven strikes. The Jumbos also sits seventh nationally with a 17.00 takeaways-per-game rate, while Jack Old has a .710 save percentage and 5.79 goals-against-average.

In 11 previous meetings between CNU and Lynchburg, the Captains hold a 7-4 edge in the series, including a 22-10 win in the third round of the 2025 NCAA Tournament. Meanwhile, Tufts has won its two battles with Christopher Newport, including a 17-16 overtime thriller at Jennings Family Stadium on March 20, 2025.

After this weekend, the Captains will continue their stretch of top-25 clashes with a neutral-site battle against No. 17 Amherst at the USA Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Maryland on March 14 at 3:30 p.m.
