HAMPDEN SYDNEY, Va. -- After opening the 2026 campaign with a decisive victory at home, the third-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will hit the road on Saturday at noon when the Captains square off with Hampden-Sydney at Lewis C. Everett Stadium.
CNU enters the weekend with a 1-0 record, while H-SC will be making the program's first appearance of the year.
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats will be available through HSCAthletics.com. The Tigers will also provide a broadcast of the action for paid subscribers of Flosports. Direct links can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Christopher Newport opened the year last Friday with a 17-4 triumph over Elizabethtown at Jennings Family Stadium. During the contest,
Jamie Smith erupted for seven goals, which equaled the fifth-highest single-game output in program history. With that performance, he also became the 21st Captain to eclipse 100 career points.
Five other players also had multi-point efforts against the Blue Jays.
Kevin Miller notched six points in the victory, while his younger brother,
Ryan Miller, had five. Ryan's performance matched the highest point total by a Captain in his collegiate debut, tying the five-goal showcase by perennial All-American Dylan Rice in his first outing on February 14, 2018 against Washington and Lee.
Along with the Miller brothers,
Randolph Campbell posted a hat-trick,
John Santoro dropped in two goals of his own, and
Jackson Platner handed out a pair of assists.
In addition to the offensive standouts, CNU won 19 of the game's 25 faceoffs, including a 10-for-13 showing by
Zach Ward.
Grant Giunchi also won eight of his 11 battles and hauled in seven ground balls. Meanwhile, on the back end,
Mason Bellinger had seven saves and three caused turnovers, while
Mark Davison chipped in with three takeaways as well.
Bellinger's three strips against Elizabethtown equaled the highest total by a goalie in program history. He matched former legend and current broadcaster Andy McGregor, who also had three caused turnovers at No. 14 Lynchburg on March 27, 2010.
On the other side, Hampden-Sydney enters 2026 with elevated expectations. The Tigers earned votes in the initial rankings released by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association and were slotted fifth in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches Poll.
Last year, H-SC produced a 12-6 record while reaching the ODAC Quarterfinals. This year's team features six reigning All-Conference performers, including its three starting attackmen. Kavin Wood led the 2025 team with 59 points, while Cole Palmer slotted second with 53. Rounding out the award-winning veterans, Broder Conley sank a team-high 40 goals last spring.
In addition to the high-volume scorers, Hampden-Sydney welcomes back All-Conference midfielders Patrick Hanes and Davis Mack as well as defenseman Tyler Steele. Meanwhile, Will Palmer is back in the cage after posting a .471 save percentage last year, while Connor Erlenbach and Evan Yntema return after splitting the majority of the faceoffs.
In 19 previous meetings between the two programs, Christopher Newport holds a 12-7 edge in the series. Last year, CNU registered a 24-8 win at Jennings Family Stadium. During that contest,
Kevin Miller set new program records with 13 points and eight assists, while Smith had eight goals. On the other end, Hanes led the Tigers with four points, and Palmer chipped in with a hat-trick.
After this weekend, CNU will return to action on February 14 at 1 p.m. with a neutral-site tilt against No. 9 Gettysburg at Severn School in Severna Park, Maryland.
