NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The third-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will welcome Grove City to town for a non-conference test beginning at noon on Saturday at Jennings Family Stadium.
Entering the weekend, CNU sits at 6-0 on the season, including 4-0 at home. Meanwhile, Grove City is 2-2 with a 1-1 mark on the road.
For those fans unable to attend the game, Christopher Newport will provide a live broadcast of the contest with Will Geise and Randy Foster calling all of the action. Live stats will also be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Saturday's battle is a rematch from the second round of the 2025 NCAA Tournament when the Captains knocked off the Wolverines, 16-14. That playoff game was the fifth time the two teams have faced each other since 2022. So far, CNU holds a 5-0 edge in the series, including a 14-13 double-overtime thriller during the regular season last spring at Jennings Family Stadium.
In addition to renewing the program's rivalry with Grove City, Saturday's game will continue a six-game homestand for the Captains. So far, CNU has won the first three bouts during its recent home stretch, including a 14-6 triumph over Randolph-Macon on Wednesday.
Against the Yellow Jackets, Christopher Newport slipped out to an 8-1 lead at halftime before rolling to the lopsided victory. Headlining the action,
Kevin Miller recorded seven points, including the 200th of his career. Reaching that milestone in just his 48th appearance, he became the fastest player in program history to eclipse that benchmark. Previously, former All-American Andrew Cook accomplished the feat in his 49th outing at CNU.
In addition to his career achievement, Miller handed out six assists against RMC, which equaled the fourth-highest single-game total in program history. Meanwhile,
Jamie Smith sank six goals for the victors. That matched the 10th-most by a Captain.
So far this season, Miller ranks second in the NCAA with 28 assists, while Smith is second with 30 goals. Smith is also climbing up Christopher Newport's career goals list. The senior All-American has 121 strikes during his four years with the program. That ranks seventh on the school's all-time charts, matching the total posted by former legend and current broadcaster Will Geise.
Smith also sits just five goals shy of equaling fellow All-American Matt Crist for the sixth-highest total in program lore.
Along with the dynamic duo on the offensive end, CNU ranks 14th in the nation in takeaways-per-contest. The Captains are averaging 14.67 strips per game, which is the third-highest rate in program history.
Among the top performers on the back side, Preseason All-American
Mark Davison leads the Captains with 13 caused turnovers, while
Brett Kelley is second with 10.
Armer Harrison,
Colin DeGrassi,
AJ Rosacker, and
Rory Keverline all have at least five apiece as well.
Although Grove City enters Saturday at 2-2, the Wolverines have faced one of the most challenging schedules in the country. So far this season, the team has dropped decisions to No. 2 Salisbury and No. 4 RIT while adding a 14-13 overtime win against No. 19 Ohio Wesleyan.
A perennial power in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, Grove City has advanced to six straight NCAA Tournaments. Among the standout veterans on this year's squad, reigning All-American Sam Stevenson already has six caused turnovers and 12 ground balls this spring. Meanwhile, senior goalie Tyler Gladstone has 38 saves, including 15 in the win over Ohio Wesleyan. He currently ranks ninth among all active goalies in the NCAA with a career 8.82 goals-against-average.
In addition to the defensive standouts, Colton Lehberg has remained one of the nation's top faceoff specialists. He has won 35 of his 67 battles this season and boasts a career .620 faceoff percentage. That places him 20th among all active players in the country.
After this weekend's action, Christopher Newport will continue its homestand on March 3 with a 3 p.m. battle against Franklin and Marshall.
