NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Squaring off against the program's third consecutive top-25 opponent, the third-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will host No. 17 Stevenson on Saturday at 6 p.m. in a non-conference showdown at Jennings Family Stadium.
Coming into the contest, CNU is 4-0 overall, including 2-0 at home. Meanwhile, Stevenson sits at 1-1 after splitting a pair of home games to begin the season.
For those fans unable to attend the game, Christopher Newport will provide a broadcast of the contest with Andy McGregor and Jake Myers calling all of the action. Live stats will also be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
After posting victories over No. 9 Gettysburg and No. 12 Washington and Lee in their previous two outings, the Captains will face their third straight nationally-ranked battle on Saturday. It marks just the seventh time in school history that CNU has squared off against three consecutive programs ranked in the top-25 nationally. During the previous six gauntlets, Christopher Newport has finished unscathed only once after knocking off No. 1 RIT, No. 7 Dickinson, and No. 6 Washington and Lee during a mid-season stretch in 2023.
Facing stiff competition in the early going, the Captains have capitalized on outstanding work in the second half. During the previous two victories, CNU has outscored the Bullets and Generals by a combined 16-6 margin after halftime. Those efforts helped the squad break a 7-7 deadlock against Gettysburg and overcome an 8-6 deficit against Washington and Lee.
The win over W&L marked the first time Christopher Newport overcame a halftime deficit to defeat a nationally-ranked opponent since beating No. 13 Lynchburg, 11-9, on March 23, 2024. In that game, the Captains trailed the Hornets, 5-3, at halftime before flipping the script over the final two quarters.
Headlining Wednesday's comeback against the Generals,
Kevin Miller finished with seven points, including five in the second half. He also handed out six assists, which was just the 15th time in program history that a player notched at least half-a-dozen helpers in a single game. Remarkably, Miller now has seven of those efforts.
Equally effective on the offensive end,
Jamie Smith deposited four goals. That marked his 22nd consecutive game with at least one strike, which stands as the fifth-longest scoring streak in school history. He is one away from matching
Brett Jackson's run of 23 straight contests with a goal from May 18, 2024 through May 17, 2025.
Jackson also had a 29-game scoring streak earlier in his career, while Andrew Cook (54 games) and Dylan Rice (27 games) are the only other Captains with longer runs than Smith's current stretch.
Along with the offensive standouts, five players had multiple takeaways against Washington and Lee.
Brett Kelley led the way with three strips, while
Colin DeGrassi,
Mark Davison,
Rory Keverline, and
Will Cramp had two apiece.
Inching closer to history, DeGrassi also made his 42nd consecutive start on Wednesday. With one more, he would tie former legend Drew Cornell for the 10th-longest "Iron Man" streak in program history. Meanwhile, the only defensemen with longer starting streaks than DeGrassi are Cornell (43), Burke Widhelm (48), Ryan Young (57), and Max Wayne (84).
Opening the year with a pair of home games, Stevenson kicked off the season with a 10-8 win over Muhlenberg before dropping a 20-19 decision during a double-overtime thriller against Elizabethtown. In the marathon battle, the Mustangs held a 19-13 advantage with less than six minutes left in regulation, but the Blue Jays scored the last seven goals, including the equalizer with one second remaining in the fourth quarter.
Despite the stumble, Stevenson features a talented collection of veterans, including four Preseason All-Americans. Camden Miller, Max Racich, and Hunter Bryant secured national honors from
USA Lacrosse Magazine in January, while Racich, Miller, and Gavin Gossen earned recognition from
Inside Lacrosse earlier this month.
So far this year, Gossen leads the Mustangs with 11 points, including five assists. Racich and Bryant also have four goals apiece, while Darrell Curtis is second on the squad with nine points. Meanwhile, on the back end, Miller has started both games on the defensive unit, while Nicholas Ungerland has a .509 save percentage between the pipes.
In seven previous meetings between the two programs, Christopher Newport holds a 5-2 edge in the series, including a 13-10 victory last spring. In the most recent match-up, Miller had seven points, including four goals, while
Mason Bellinger grabbed 17 saves. On the other side, Racich had a hat-trick for Stevenson.
Following Saturday's game, CNU will remain at home for a Wednesday tilt against Randolph-Macon at 4 p.m.
