NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport baseball team will host Southern Virginia for a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 11:00 a.m. with the second game tentatively scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
The Captains (1-0) will look to add to a season-opening victory against Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday while the Knights (0-0) are opening the season at Captains Park. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available for both games with links found at CNUsports.com.
CNU holds a dominant 26-1 advantage in the all-time series against Southern Virginia and boasts a 16-game win streak heading into the weekend. Last season, CNU captured a 17-4 win over seven innings in the lone matchup of the year against SVU, coming on March 25. In that game,
Jake Benedict was 4-for-4 with a home run, a triple, 2 RBI, and four runs scored. The center fielder reached base all six of his plate appearances to help lead the way.

Cameron Slough (1-4) each registered at least one base hit against the Knights.
Charlie Gunn, who opened the 2026 season with a win in relief on Tuesday, earned the start in his rookie campaign and
Mitchell Mortensen captured the win in relief with three scoreless frames out of the pen.
On Tuesday, the Captains opened the season with a 9-4 win at home against Eastern Mennonite. In that win,
Jake Benedict logged three hits with a pair of doubles and a couple runs scored. Reinhold and Maxie each registered multi-hit season debuts with a pair of singles while five different CNU pitchers combined to strikeout 10 batters. Among them were right-hander
Jackson Baird, who threw into the sixth inning without giving up a hit.
Southern Virginia was picked sixth in the USA South Preseason Coaches Poll and will be led by All-State returner Zack Geertsen. Geertsen hit .431 in 40 games played last season with 21 extra-base hits and finished out the year with 100 total bases. The dangerous bat logged an OPS of 1.141 while hitting in the middle of the Southern Virginia lineup. He was also the team's leading pitcher with a 4-4 record a 4.99 ERA in 11 starts.
Following the twin bill against SVU, the Captains will make the return trip to Harrisonburg, Va. to take on Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday, February 17. First pitch against the Royals is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
