SALISBURY, Md. - Christopher Newport University never trailed Wednesday night, cruising to a 77-49 victory at Salisbury University. The Captains, ranked eighth in the nation, improved to 19-3 and have now won 11 straight games, as well as 18 of the last 19.
John Krikorian's squad was led by junior
Toa Hollenbeck and senior
Collin Hines, who each scored 14 points. Junior
Tyson Henderson also reached double digits with 12, and juniors
Isaiah Dozier and
Zyir Baskerville each added nine as CNU held the Sea Gulls to 32 percent shooting at the Maggs Center.
The Captains used a 30-8 first half run over the final 14 minutes to increase a three-point lead, 11-8, to a 25-point advantage at halftime, 41-16. The first half surge included a 15-0 run, and CNU added to the lead in the second stanza...going ahead by as many as 32 en route to the 28-point triumph.
"I think our guys did a great job staying focused, and you could really see it through the first half," Krikorian said following the win. "We were crisp on both ends of the floor, and that's what you have to have in a hostile environment like this. We've had some wild games here at Salisbury, and we were prepared for one...but fortunately for us this didn't turn out to be one of them."
Christopher Newport out-rebounded Salisbury, 44-29, and the Captains shot 51 percent from the field (30-of-59). All 18 players dressed saw action for the Captains, and 11 got into the scoring column. No player saw more than 25 minutes of action.
"It's was important to play well tonight knowing we've got a big game at Mary Washington on Saturday," Krikorian continued. "Something that we haven't done enough this year is put teams away. You want to do that obviously to win, but also to get your brothers in the game off the bench and give them the opportunity, because these guys work their tails off in practice. I think we had a lot of guys who came in and played well tonight off the bench."
Salisbury fell to 10-12 and lost for the fifth straight time. Leon Elung was the lone Sea Gull to reach double figures with 12 points. The Captains now hold a 40-16 lead over SU in the all-time series, and have won 17 of the last 18 games in the series. The teams will meet again at 7;00 p.m.on Saturday, February 21st, at the Freeman Center in the regular-season finale for both squads.
Christopher Newport travels to Fredericksburg on Saturday to take on the 11th-ranked Eagles of the University of Mary Washington. Tip off time is set for 6:00 p.m. at the Anderson Center on the UMW campus. The Captains defeated the Eagles at the Freeman Center last Wednesday, 86-77.
