NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - It's Homecoming and Hall of Fame Weekend at Christopher Newport University, and Saturday afternoon the 14th-ranked Captains host the Pioneers of William Paterson University. Kickoff for the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opener for both schools is set for 1:00 p.m. at TowneBank Stadium.
Paul Crowley's squad is 3-0 and coming off a 21-0 road victory last Saturday at 13th-ranked Susquehanna University. The game marked the first time in program history the Captains have shut out a ranked opponent. William Paterson, meanwhile, is 0-3 to start the season, and the Pioneers are coming off a 19-16 overtime loss last Saturday at home to Moravian.
"We're always motivated and enthused to be playing in front of our home crowd at TowneBank Stadium," Crowley said as he prepared his team for its first home game in almost a month. "What's happened in the past doesn't matter, we've got to be focused and prepared every time we take the field. William Paterson will be physical and they've got some very talented guys. We certainly can't afford to take anyone lightly, and I know we're going to be challenged."
WPU and CNU will be meeting for the 11th time, and the Captains hold a 9-1 lead in the all-time series. Christopher Newport has won the last four games, most recently a 52-7 triumph last season in Wayne, N.J. The Captains are 5-0 all-time at home vs. the Pioneers.
