SALISBURY, Md. -- Capitalizing on a defensive masterpiece and a pair of second-half goals, the third-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team upended No. 6 Salisbury, 2-0, during a top-10 clash on Saturday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium.
Facing a high-powered opponent that entered the weekend averaging over 22 shots per contest, the Captains limited the Sea Gulls to just three total attempts, which marked Salisbury's lowest output in two years.
Ella Fallen stoned the only two on-target shots of the contest, while
Ellie Nuckols helped force the third try to spin wide following a corner in the opening period.
Remarkably, CNU did not allow a single shot in the second half while completing the shutout. Meanwhile, Saturday's game was the first time Salisbury was silenced at home since an identical 2-0 setback against Williams in the NCAA Quarterfinals on November 13, 2022. The squad had scored at least once in 31 straight games at Sea Gull Stadium before the Captains arrived in town.
On the other side of the field,
Riley Iasiello continued her domination of Salisbury after kicking off the scoring with a strike in the 42nd minute. In six career games against the Sea Gulls, the senior now has seven total points, including the game-winning goal in each of the last two battles.
With her third-quarter dagger, Iasiello also found the back of the cage for the third straight game, equaling the longest stretch of her career.
Along with Iasiello,
Lindsey Loar collected her 10th goal of the season after giving the visitors a little breathing room early in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile,
Emma Weber and
Courtney Hughlett pitched in with assists, while
Avery Mast played a crucial role on both goals to help round out the offensive heroes.
With the win, Christopher Newport improved to 10-1 on the season and picked up the program's first ever victory over Salisbury at Sea Gull Stadium. It was also just the third time in school history that the Captains posted a multi-goal triumph against SU. Incidentally, this year's senior class has had a hand in all three of those lopsided wins after recording a 3-1 victory and a 2-0 triumph during a pair of battles in 2023.
On the other side, the setback dropped Salisbury to 9-3 overall.
Just seconds into the game, the Sea Gulls burst down the field and had an opportunity to open the scoring, but Fallen made a kick save on an initial attempt before
Courtney Hughlett took control of the rebound and worked the ball out of harm's way. Shortly thereafter,
Gigi Stephan flipped possession near midfield and connected with
Calli Martin, who quickly secured a corner for the visitors.
Looking to capitalize,
Caroline Hughlett fired a laser towards the right pipe. On the back side, Iasiello settled behind the defense and tried to deflect the missile around the goalie, but the ball just skipped over her stick.
Continuing the offensive surge, Loar squeezed through a horde of defenders, slipped into the circle, and unloaded a dagger that bounced wide. Then,
Courtney Hughlett threaded a pass to Iasiello, who turned and whistled a one-timer at the cage, but Salisbury's keeper made a sprawling save. Although Nuckols recovered the ricochet, her follow-up attempt was turned away as well.
Meanwhile, on the other end of the field, Christopher Newport kept a tight lid on Salisbury's attack. Stephan won a race for a long hit down the center of the turf to thwart a breakaway opportunity. Then,
Kelly Via stamped out a surge along the baseline. With pressure continuing to mount, the hosts picked up a corner, but Nuckols ended the threat. Serving as the flyer, the senior bolted out to the top of the arc to confront an initial shooter. That pressure forced the Sea Gull to hand over possession to another attacker, but Nuckols quickly changed course, cut to her right, and caused the ensuing shot to skip past the left pipe.
In the second stanza, CNU continued to blanket the field.
Caroline Hughlett chipped the ball away from an attacker at the top of the arc, while Loar wrestled one away near the right sideline. Then, with a 3-on-2 developing,
Kendall Gibson made a lunging stop to intercept a pass on the defensive end before Nuckols sent a Sea Gull spinning into the turf after picking her pockets along the left boundary.
On the offensive end, Iasiello had a point-blank rip swallowed by the goalie before Loar generated a corner after twisting her way through three defenders in the center of the circle. On the ensuing play,
Caroline Hughlett tried to slip a shot through a crowd in front of the cage, but her snipe just missed the mark.
Keeping the ball planted on the offensive side,
Maddy Gagnon had a slick strip to kill a clear near the right sideline, while Gibson stonewalled a second attempt along the 25. Unfortunately, the Captains could not quite find an opening during the lengthy push in the middle of the stanza.
After quieting CNU's rally, the Sea Gulls went back to work on their end of the field, but Christopher Newport held firm. Via built a blockade at the top of the circle to stymie an initial rush before Gibson gobbled up a deflection in the right corner. Later, Fallen sealed off the cage with a stop on an elevated missile, while Via grabbed a pass that bounced off the stick of a streaker deep inside the zone, which kept the game scoreless entering halftime.
Following the break, Salisbury had another solid scoring opportunity in the 37th minute after picking up a corner. However,
Courtney Hughlett dipped low and disrupted an initial look from the top right. Although the Sea Gulls tried to push inside, Mast was there to snatch the loose ball before escorting it into the right corner.
After her defensive efforts, Mast was at the center of the action on the opposite end of the field. First, she split two defenders to pick off a pass while sprinting into the circle. At the last second, she was tripped up by a Sea Gull and spilled to the turf while suffering a hard fall in front of the cage. Unfazed by the altercation, she jumped to her feet and came bolting back down the field just a few moments later.
On the second surge, Mast collected a feed from
Courtney Hughlett and outran two Sea Gulls on a dash from midfield. Eventually, she dished the ball to Weber, who was stationed on the right side of the circle.
With a little room to work, Weber sent a pass to Iasiello, who was positioned in front of the cage. Although two defenders crashed down on her, the senior slipped a seed between both Sea Gulls while painting the right side of the cage with a perfectly-placed dart for the game's first goal.
Closing in on the end of the third quarter, the hosts tried to retaliate, but CNU stayed vigilant on the defensive end. Gibson came through with a nice tackle to stone a run up the right sideline before
Courtney Hughlett forced an off-kilter pass along the opposite boundary. Then, in the waning moments,
Caroline Hughlett intercepted an aerial to kill off Salisbury's last surge of the period.
Still fostering a slim one-goal lead entering the final frame, Christopher Newport returned to the offensive end. Once again, Mast was right in the middle of the action.
During a clear attempt by the hosts, Mast found herself isolated in a one-on-one match-up in the right corner. Trying to find some space, Salisbury's defender pushed to her right before cutting back towards the sideline in an attempt to slither up the boundary. However, Mast stayed in front of her the whole time. Eventually, the junior pounced at the perfect moment and stole possession before flipping the ball off the Sea Gull's foot. Then, she wiggled her way through a crowd near the arc to earn a corner.
On the ensuing play,
Caroline Hughlett inserted the ball to Mast, who flipped it to
Courtney Hughlett. With some room, the senior rifled a rocket at the cage. The ball bounced off two defenders before Loar settled it on the left side of the zone. After taking possession, she spun to her right and whipped a worm-burner that sailed underneath the goalie for her 10th strike of the season.
With a two-goal cushion, the Captains closed out the contest with more solid work on the back end. Stephan stayed deep to pick off a pass in the center of the circle before playing the ball off an attacker while clearing the threat. Then, after a long hit slipped behind the defense, Fallen came charging out of the cage and won a footrace for the roller. She eventually punted it out of the zone before a Salisbury attacker could catch up to the play.
Later, in the final moments of regulation, Via intercepted a feed, chipped the ball around a Sea Gull, and blasted it back up the turf. Then,
Caroline Hughlett tracked down a midfielder from behind and stole possession along the right sideline, while Gibson and
Courtney Hughlett forced a turnover with a double-team at the edge of the arc to complete the shutout.
Fittingly, Gibson helped close out the contest after adding her name to the history books on Saturday. A staple on the back line for years, the senior started her 50th straight game for the Captains, becoming just the 18th player to hit that benchmark. In that exclusive club, she joined a list of luminaries including the Hughlett twins as well as CNU Hall of Famers Jacque Mayer and
Marlene Lichty.
Overall, Christopher Newport held a 17-3 advantage in shots and a 7-3 lead in penalty corners against Salisbury.
The Captains will return to action on Monday when they cap off their road trip with a 5 p.m. test at St. Mary's (Md.).
