BRISTOL, R.I. -- For the third time this season, the third-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team will travel to New England as the Captains prepare for a battle with Roger Williams beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Bayside Field.
Entering the weekend, CNU sits at 8-1 on the season, including 6-1 on the road. Meanwhile, Rogers Williams is 8-4 with a 3-1 mark at home.
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at RWUHawks.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Sunday's game will end a lengthy mid-season layoff for the Captains, who have not seen action since a 10-0 win at Batten on September 30. During that showdown, nine different players collected a goal, equaling the most scorers in a single game in school history. Headlining the assault,
Avery Mast established a new career-high with five points, including a pair of strikes.
Along with Mast,
Hailey Ward and
Maddy Gagnon both notched their first career goal, while
Victoria Trejo added her first tally of the season, and
Mari de Castro pitched in with her first career assist. Veterans
Kate Engle,
Courtney Hughlett,
Riley Iasiello,
Gigi Stephan, and
Emma Weber also posted goals for the victors.
Remarkably efficient, CNU scored its 10 tallies on just 17 shots. Overall, the squad's .588 shooting percentage was the third-highest in program history and the finest mark since 2000.
In addition to the offensive stars, Christopher Newport allowed just one shot to the Marlins. It was the fourth time this season that the Captains had more goals than their opponent had shots.
So far this year, CNU is the only team in the nation that ranks in the top-10 in both scoring offense and scoring defense. Currently, the squad is third in both categories. Overall, the Captains are averaging 4.56 goals per game while surrendering just 0.33 per contest. Christopher Newport is also first nationally in scoring margin (4.23 goals per game).
On an individual level,
Ella Fallen sits atop the NCAA leaderboard with a .923 save percentage and ranks second with a 0.26 goals-against-average. Meanwhile, on the other end of the field,
Lindsey Loar is 18th in the country with a 2.56 points-per-game rate.
Roger Williams had its three-game winning streak snapped on Friday evening with a 7-1 setback at No. 5 Williams. Against the Ephs, Emma Sheldon scored her first goal of the season, while Meili Raspante and Shae O'Neill combined for 12 saves. However, the victors jumped out to 4-0 halftime lead and never looked back to grab the win.
So far this season, the Hawks have been led by Brodie Loveland, who has a team-high 10 goals and 24 points. Eva Wood has also deposited nine strikes while handing out five assists. On the defensive end, Raspante has a team-best .667 save percentage, while O'Neill sports a 1.81 goals-against-average in 456 minutes of action.
Sunday's match-up will be the first ever meeting between CNU and Roger Williams in field hockey.
After this weekend, Christopher Newport will return to action on October 17 with a 1 p.m. test at No. 6 Salisbury.
