NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After enduring a cancellation in the schedule due to the winter weather on the East Coast, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball schedule will continue on Wednesday night after an 11-day break as the Captains (15-4) host Southern Virginia University (13-4) at 6:00 p.m.

CNU, ranked No. 21 in the WBCA Coaches' Poll, will look to bounce back after an overtime setback to Salisbury in their last outing. The Captains were scheduled to face Johnson & Wales (N.C.) over the weekend, but due to the icy conditions on the road, the game was forced to be cancelled. Due to that change, the Captains will now face Virginia University of Lynchburg in the final home game of the season on Tuesday, February 17 at 6:00 p.m.

The Knights, on the other hand, were able to get their most recent game at Brevard in ahead of the storm and captured the team's eighth straight victory. Southern Virginia escaped Brevard with a four-point win, 72-68, to improve to 13-4 overall this season.

The game will be Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day at the Freeman Center. All CNU faculty and staff can receive up to four free General Admission tickets by visiting the Athletic Ticket Office in the Freeman Center, open from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. For fans unable to make the game in person, live stats and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com.

The all-time series between the Captains and Knights is heavily in favor of Christopher Newport, 22-2, but Southern Virginia captured the latest win with a 69-65 decision at home last season. The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak against the Knights for CNU and Southern Virginia returns four of the five starters from last year's matchup. That includes seniors Abigail Snyder, who led the way with 18 points, and Ruth Kempler, who finished the win with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Kempler has played just five games this season, but has returned to the lineup in each of the last three contests including a 10-point showing at Brevard.

This year, Snyder is averaging 19.3 points per game to lead the Knights offense while Maria Savvun (10.5 ppg) and Anna Kimball (10.3 ppg) are also averaging double figures. Kimball is averaging a double-double while hauling in 10.2 rebounds per game and also paces the Southern Virginia defense with 27 blocks.

The Captains will counter with the well-balanced attack it has consistently featured all season long. Sophomore Madison McKenzie is the lone active Captain averaging double figures with 12.2 points per game while senior McKenna Snively is adding 9.2 points per game off the bench. The reserves rank second nationally in Division III with over 37 points per game coming from the bench, which also features junior Mia Wilson (8.1 ppg) and sophomore Sarah Pritz (6.7 ppg).

Defensively, Christopher Newport has accumulated 290 steals in the first 19 games and ranks fifth nationally in steals per game. Three CNU players have logged at least 30 steals through 19 games played; McKenzie leads the way with 36 thefts while Caitlin Crump has 35 and Elizabeth Creed adds 31.

Following the Wednesday evening tilt against Southern Virginia, the Captains will host Mary Washington on Saturday, February 7 at 2:00 p.m. The matchup against the Eagles will be the annual Play4Kay Pink game for breast cancer awareness.
