No. 17 Christopher Newport Women's Basketball Back in Action Saturday Against Salisbury

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team will return to action on Saturday, January 17 as the Captains (15-3) will kickstart a triple-header at the Freeman Center with a matchup against Salisbury University (10-6).

CNU, ranked No. 17 in the WBCA Coaches Poll and No. 25 in the D3hoops.com Top 25, will play the first of three games on Saturday as the men's program will welcome in East Texas Baptist and the final game will feature the Salisbury men versus Mary Hardin-Baylor. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available for all three at CNUsports.com. 

With a 15-3 overall record, the Captains have won 13 of the last 14 games including three straight heading into Saturday's tilt against Salisbury. Facing the Sea Gulls, CNU has won 19 in a row and improved to 34-12 all-time against the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference foe. The current win streak dates back to the 2015-16 season and includes ten in a row at home. 

CNU leads Division III in points scored this season and ranks as one of the top-20 scoring offenses in the country while averaging 75.7 points per game. The Captains scored 91 in their most recent outing against Lehman College while being led by sophomore guard Madison McKenzie with 17 points. The second-year star has led the Captains in scoring in seven games this season and boasts a team-high 11.9 points per game. Also a standout on the defensive end, McKenzie leads the team in steals with 34 with nine blocked shots. 

Senior McKenna Snively ranks second among active players with 8.5 points per game and has been a dangerous threat from long range this season wtih 12 made three-pointers in eight games. She is shooting a team-high 38.7 percent from beyond the arc. Also adding depth from three-point land have been Mia Wilson and Caitlin Crump with with 22 and 28 made three's, respectively. 

Salisbury will counter with a lineup that leads the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference in three-point shooting, knocking down 32.2 percent from long range this season. Nicole Miller leads the attack with 16.3 points per game while sinking 27 triples this year. Abby Plaugher has a team-high 32 makes from long range while shooting over 40 percent and the veteran is second on the team in scoring with 14.1 points per game. 

Following the Saturday afternoon matchup, the Captains will travel to Johnson & Wales (N.C.) on Saturday, January 24 at 4:00 p.m. After that trip, CNU will return home for two in a row against Southern Virginia (Jan 28) and Mary Washington (Feb 7).
