NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
Alyssa Dozier and
Megan James led a balanced attack with 12 and 11 kills, respectively, and Christopher Newport University bounced back from a tough first day of the Captains Challenge with a 3-1 win over William Paterson Saturday afternoon.
Dozier also had six solo blocks, eight total, and an assist. CNU got eight kills apiece from
Carley Coghill and
Samantha Dorn and seven from
Simara Alexander, who added two solo blocks.
Freshman setter
Fielding Croft finished with 20 assists and five aces. Libero
Maddie Hanes had 20 digs and two aces.
CNU (3-3) won the first two sets 25-19, 25-16 before dropping the third 25-20. Then came the fourth, which went down to the wire.
With neither team leading by more than four points in the set, the match was tied at 22 and again at 24. Croft then served her fifth ace, and Dozier clinched the match with her 12
th kill.
CNU finished with 51 kills to William Paterson's 34. The Captains also had more blocks (11-2) and fewer errors (22-30) than the Pioneers.
CNU's next match will be against St. Mary's College of Maryland Tuesday night at the Freeman Center.
