LEXINGTON, Va. – In a matchup between two of the nation's top teams, third-ranked Christopher Newport traveled to 15
th-ranked Washington and Lee University on Saturday and both teams settled for a 1-1 draw. The Captains remained unbeaten on the season with a 6-0-2 record while the Generals bounced back from their second loss and are now 4-2-1 on the year.
The two talented teams trade first-half goals in the first 15 minutes of action and then the defensive units took over.
Alex Devers got CNU on the board first before Sarah Zimmerman notched the equalizer just over a minute later.
In goal, junior
Amy Sidaway put together one of the most sensational starts of her career as the home team pressured the Captains defense throughout. Sidaway made a career-high nine saves as the Generals peppered her with 19 total shots including ten on target.
The first ten minutes of the second half were particularly impressive as Sidaway turned away three shots on goal including one from Mary Parrish Green and two by Elizabeth Zimmerman. In the 68
th minute, Washington and Lee nearly teetered in front but a defensive save off the line and another stop by Sidaway turned away the would-be go-ahead chance. The CNU netminder made two more saves on attempts in the next three minutes as Washington and Lee kept coming.
After weathering the surge in the middle of the period, the Captains controlled the action moving forward in the final 15 minutes.
Grace Shifflett ripped a show low left that forced a save by the Generals goalkeeper, but like the hosts, Christopher Newport was unable to connect on the gamewinner.
In the early portion of the game, the highly anticipated matchup featured plenty of fireworks but it was the Captains to burst through first. After checking in just moments earlier, freshman
Julia Joyner made the most of her first touch in the game when she connected with
Molly Seventko, and eventually, Devers, for the score. The junior from Pennsylvania sent home her third goal of the season to give the Captains a 1-0 lead.
Unfortunately for CNU, the home team responded off a free kick just overa a minute later. Bryn Bissinger found Zimmerman for a goal into the left side of the netting to equalize.
Hanna Heaton led the Captains in total attempts from the field with four while Devers put both of her two attempts in the game on goal.
Lexi Hazelgrove added two more shots while
Bella DiTommaso and Shifflett each had one.
The defense stayed strong in front of Sidaway with DiTommaso,
Addy Hennessy, and
Malayah Warner playing the full 90 minutes against the strong offensive side.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Wednesday, September 24 as they put their unbeaten record on the line against Catholic University of America. CNU will host the Cardinals at 5:00 p.m. at Captains Field.
