NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After an impressive performance on Captains Field this weekend, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team improved to 4-0-2 on the season with wins against Rutgers-Camden and Hampden-Sydney. Following the weekend, CNU junior defender
Yazan Yaghmmour was honored as the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.
Yaghmmour is the second CNU player to earn Defensive Player of the Week honors this season after senior goalkeeper
Hayden Dewey earned the recognition on September 2.
This weekend, Yaghmmour played 144 minutes total in two games as part of a defense that earned a shutout against Rutgers-Camden, 1-0, and held a potent Hampden-Sydney attack to just one goal for the first time this season.
Additionally, the junior scored the game-winning goal against the Scarlet Raptors and then assisted on a goal against Hampden-Sydney. In the 75th minute, he scored his first career goal on a free kick against Rutgers-Camden. Then, in the 69th minute against the Tigers, Yaghmmour earned an assist as CNU pulled ahead, 3-1.
Christopher Newport has now won four straight games including three on-goal victories while relying on the strong play of the back line. Opponents have scored just four times in six games for a 0.67 average while taking 10.5 total shots per game so far.
CNU will return to action this weekend as they hit the road for the first time in 2025. The Captains will first face Trinity (Texas) on a neutral field in Abilene before taking on host Hardin-Simmons.
