Christopher Newport Men's Tennis Maintains Top-20 Ranking to Close out 2024-25 Season

TEMPE, Ariz. -- After hauling in the highest national ranking in program history at No. 17 late this Spring, the Christopher Newport men's tennis team closed out the 2024-25 season with the highest finishing position at No. 19 in the nation. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Rankings were released on Wednesday evening, with CNU maintaining its spot in the top-20 while moving up to No. 6 in the Atlantic South regional rankings.

In addition to the Captains ranking as a team, Ashton Legum and Vincent Truong also finished the year in the national rankings as a doubles tandem, checking in at No. 27. It marks the highest finish for a doubles team since Alec Strause and Ryan Macy finished the 2021 campaign ranked No. 16.

Christopher Newport put together a banner season under the direction of C2C Coaching Staff of the Year, led by Eric Christiansen, and captured the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Championship. CNU finished the year with a 13-8 overall record after playing one of the most challenging schedules in the nation. The Captains played 13 opponents in the national rankings including eight teams in the top-25; CNU earned wins against six ranked opponents including back-to-back victories in the conference tournament to hoist the second conference championship trophy since joining the league in 2013-14.

The team featured two first team All-Conference players and four more earning second team All-League plaudits in singles action. Headlining the team's success in 2024-25 was the C2C Doubles Team of the Year in Legum and Truong. The veteran tandem played together in 17 matches during the season and boasted a 10-7 overall record together.  The duo were 8-6 at No. 1 doubles, including a pivotal win against Mary Washington in the C2C Championship.

In addition to a strong overall season, Legum and Truong paired up for several marquee wins including a 6-3 win over the fourth-ranked team in the region from Johns Hopkins on April 19. Additionally, the duo downed Salisbury's regionally-ranked top pair to help CNU advance in the C2C semifinals.
